Camp WaBak

During the summer of 2013, I was a Unit Leader at a Girl Scout Camp in Marietta, SC called Camp WaBak. During my time there, I started off as a Unit Leader's Assitant, but was promoted after the first week of camp to Unit Leader. As a Unit Leader, I was in charge of a group of up to 30 different campers per week. My responsibilities as a Unit Leader included checking the campers in and out, keeping up with the campers' personal information as well as making sure they got their medicine on time. In this position, I interacted with my assistant in order to make plans for the week as well as come up with a list of supplies for activities. I would also work with other Unit Leaders and the camp director to make activites and theme nights for the whole camp to enjoy. During my time at Camp WaBak, I learned the value of going outside of your comfort zone in order to make sure the campers had the best week they could possibly have. I had to be a fun leader but at the same time, I had to make sure my campers were safe and healthy. I would also help any campers whenever they were sick, injuried or were nostalgic for home. Those experiences helped me learn how to properly respond to a child whenever he or she is in distress. I learned that different campers responded in different ways and I had to be flexible when I tried to help them. Being a Unit Leader taught me how to be calm in crisis and flexible when plans suddenly changed.
